From Design to Smile - the treatment diary to a new smile with Dental Implants

The journey towards a new smile and improved quality of life with dental implants may be less complicated and time consuming than you would think, in five simple steps.

Step 1 – Consultation & Case Planning

Your dentist will assesses your health and oral condition and discuss with you the advantages and disadvantages of various treatment solutions and highlight any potential risk factors due to any medical or oral health conditions.

Your dentist will take X-rays and impressions of your mouth in order to produce plaster study models to establish the length, diameter and position of the implant. Dental Implant Treatment

Sufficient jawbone must be present in order for implantation to go ahead. Patients who have insufficient jawbone will first require bone grafting. Bone loss may happen, for example, if a tooth has been missing for a long time and the jaw may have slowly receded. As a consequence, the jawbone subsequently needs to be built up before the dental implant can be placed.

Step 2 – Implant Placement

The dental implant surgery is a short procedure carried out under local anaesthesia. It involves inserting the dental implant into the jawbone, depending on the individual case; a temporary restoration may be placed on the implant during the healing stage. This allows the patient to enjoy a more natural looking smile early in the process.

Step 3 – Healing Period

The healing phase is typically between 3 and 12 weeks, until the implant is securely attached to the jaw bone. After approximately one week, the stitches are removed. The healing time depends on the kind of dental implant, your bone health, and your physical condition. Patients should keep in mind that diligent oral hygiene is vital for healing.

Step 4 - Placement of the Abutment

When healing is complete, your restorative dentist removes the cover screw and places the abutment. An impression is then taken and the final crown is ordered from
the dental lab.

Step 5 – Final Crown

Be it a dental crown, bridge or denture, the dental laboratory uses the impression taken by your dentist to produce the individual restoration. When the final crown is returned from the dental lab, the temporary crown is removed, and the final beautiful new tooth is placed and you’re done.
